TOWN CERTIFIED WITH ISO 14001 ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT STANDARD The town of Ormea is at 750m on the sea level, in the middle of the Ligurian Alps, and counts around 1900 inhabitants. The first peculiarity of its historical centre is its heart shaped perimeter, with Via Roma – the high street running through the middle, while a tangled and charming maze of narrow streets and alleys unties around it – the so called ‘trevi’ in the local dialect, where you will stumble across old decorated houses and timeless little squares, legacy of an almost untouched past and architecture in its original shape, as well as beautiful statues and fountains, made from local black marble, scattered throughout the village.
The town is surrounded by an uncontaminated natural environment. The multitude of footpaths, horse riding and mountain bike tracks, climbing spots, clean river waters (ideal for fishing) and the cross-country ski centre ‘Cantarana’ make it heaven for sport and nature lovers. The surrounding territory is scattered with hamlets and little villages that have remained untouched throughout time.
This harmony between culture and environment is well represented in Ormea by a Forestry School, located within the magnificent 19th century Grand Hotel building and surrounded by a large park of age-old sequoias and typical local trees, today an important area for studies and research on environmental and territorial issues.
